Amberton University is a private Christian university in Garland, Texas. It began as part of Abilene Christian University in 1971.

History

[edit]

Initially planted as an ACU brand campus in Mesquite, TX, Amberton relocated to Garland, TX, in 1974. After receiving accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1981, Amberton separated from ACU, and in 1982 became Amber University. The current name, Amberton University, was officially adopted in 2001.

Amberton’s first branch campus was opened in Frisco, Texas, in 2006.

Students

[edit]

Amberton University caters to the "nontraditional student," typically individuals over 21 who pursue higher education after their initial post-high school eligibility. This term also encompasses married students, those working full-time, students pursuing a second bachelor's degree, or those transitioning to a new career field. Amberton University focuses on creating a supportive educational environment without expanding their enterprise towards athletic teams or facilities like dormitories. As a result, students solely seeking a degree enjoy a highly cost-effective education that does not require their tuition to fund tertiary collegiate programs and amenities.

Eligibility for acceptance to Amberton includes fluency in English and a minimum age of 21. As an early pioneer in distance learning programs and degrees, Amberton offers online or on-campus courses taught largely by faculty actively working in their distinguished field. The university also offers credit for "life learning" to undergraduate students, adhering to regional accreditation standards, though this option is not available for graduate students.

Accreditation

[edit]

Amberton University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The university upholds a Christian philosophy but guarantees freedom of conscience, meaning students are not required to adhere to any specific doctrinal beliefs to study or graduate. Additionally, Amberton offers credentials such as certificates and diplomas at approved degree levels.

The university’s Project Management degrees are accredited by the Project Management Institute Global Accreditation Center (PMI-GAC). Selected business degree programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). The Human Resource Management degree aligns with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), and counseling degrees (except Christian Counseling) meet the licensure requirements for the State of Texas. The Accounting degrees are aligned with the requirements of the State of Texas as well.
