There is an image of Prof. Geoffrey on the Nobel Prize websitethat would be suitable for use on this article. Cathal Toomey.

He deserves the Nobel prize for basically inventing IVF. Ekem 17:22, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Ekem you must be feeling gratified! Your prediction came true. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.144.36.2 (talk) 19:24, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Beautiful. --Aqwis (talk) 23:27, 12 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The invalid picture and caption should not be part of the article, unless someone can find the photo somewhere on Wikipedia somewhere or find if it available to be used on wikipedia. Otherwise, it should be deleted. Feedback is appreciated. Adamdaley (talk) 11:38, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Birthplace

[edit]

I believe that Robert Edwards was born in Batley, West Yorkshire and not Manchester. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Countarthurstrong (talkcontribs) 20:14, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Robert Edwards (physiologist)Robert Edwards (physiologist) – per WP:COMMONNAME - sources do not use his middle initial Ghmyrtle (talk) 10:05, 12 April 2013 (UTC) PS: I attempted to move this manually, from the old title of Robert G. Edwards, but obviously did something wrong and then was unable to self-revert. As far as I can see, the talk page has been renamed but not the article - I'm not sure why. Apologies to anyone having to clear this up. Ghmyrtle (talk) 10:08, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you are looking at sources now, you need to bear in mind that many of the obits will have used this article - particularly its title - as a source for his name, and that many academic journals routinely use initials. But news reports and other non-academic sources when he was alive do not, so far as I know, use the initial, and on that basis it should not be used as the article title. But my main concern is that whatever I did (and don't ask me to explain how) has left the article and its talk page with different titles, and that needs to be rectified one way or the other. Ghmyrtle (talk) 21:24, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It seems that reliable sources are mixed over the usage of the initial, please see below:

Robert G. Edwards: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]

Robert Edwards: [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16]

so I don't see a case to move an article with natural disambiguation to one using parentheses. Zarcadia (talk) 22:01, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

OK, fine. I don't really care. But will someone remove the inconsistency between the article and the talk page? Ghmyrtle (talk) 22:12, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hey! Don't get despondent. It's not personal, we just want to make the most informed choices possible. I'm sure you've got a lot to give to the wikipedia project! :) Zarcadia (talk) 22:27, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
"I don't really care" means "I don't really care" - not "I'm going to end it all".  :-) Ghmyrtle (talk) 22:36, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

For conflict of interest reasons I am offering these suggestions rather than editing (I am Robert Edwards authorized biographer and knew him for forty years). 1) delete ‘lung disease’ in final section (not the cause of death); 2) mention should be made of his pioneering work on embryonic stem cells in Glasgow. For reference I suggest his historical article: Edwards, RG. IVF and the history of stem cells. Nature 413; 349-351, 2001; 3) at the risk of being accused of self-serving I suggest the subject’s authorized biography should be cited as the most complete and up to date record of the man’s life andachievements: Gosden RG. Let There Be Life. An Intimate Portrait of Robert Edwards and his IVF Revolution. Jamestowne Bookworks, Williamsburg, Virginia, 2019. Call him "Sir"?

[edit]

Please check: Is Robert Geoffrey Edwards with title CBE entitled to be called "Sir"? Normally the male with CBE, being the third class of the Order of the British Empire, is not called "Sir"; only males of the two highest classes are.

No this is correctly documented. His knighthood (as documented Knight Bachelor, awarded 2011) is not associated with any order, so post-nominal initials are not appropriate, nor do they supersede his CBE. Semudobia (talk) 11:25, 13 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
