May remove dead links (keeping text)Ieashu (talk) 19:57, 21 June 2013 (UTC) How does this article fit with OSI_model?[reply]

I was under the understanding that the OSI model was a framework under which protocols fit rather than being a set of protocols itself?

OSI is actually a set of protocols. The OSI model was developed, during the development of the OSI protocol set, in order to help organise the OSI protocol stack. OSI predate the widespread adoption of the Internet, and on the whole are a failure, although some of them are still used for some purposes.
Ah, thanks for clearing that up.

The layers in this aren't the same as the layers in the OSI model - the OSI model has separate physical link and data link layers, and doesn't have a routing protocol layer. Guy Harris 07:25, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

According to the management annex to the basic OSI Reference model, ISO 7498/4, and the "OSI Routeing [sic] Framework", ISO/TR 9575, routing protocols are in a parallel layer management stack, and thus are layer 3 management protocols.

I propose we develop a template that shows the OSI layer in widely used standards and protocols, similar to the existing {{IPStack}} template..

Could you clarify what you mean by an OSI layer? There are very few cases, in modern networking, that true OSI protocols are used. As with the IS-IS routing protocol and X.500 Directory Services, they have been adapted to an IP stack.Hcberkowitz 16:31, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ISO 9542 is available (in PostScript) from http://acm.org/sigcomm/standards/iso_stds/ESIS/index.html; google gives this (apparently useful) explanatory page on it: http://www.javvin.com/protocolESIS.html -- JesseW, the juggling janitor 01:19, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

Is the X.25 protocol suite equal to or subset of OSI protocol suite?

[edit]

Are all network layer protocols are of the X.25 protocol suite?Mange01 (talk) 13:35, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not a textbook

Any objections before I take out the garbage like the obscure mnemonic and the reference to MAP? --Coolcaesar (talk) 10:46, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
