Elephantiasis is not a misnomer The meaning is not "disease caused by elephants" but disease causing deformity that makes the, affected limb look like that of an elephant because of the soft tissue swelling and skin hardening. Thus the name refers to the morphological features of the condition and not to its cause. REF 1. HISTORY OF ELEPHANTIASIS, HIRAK BEHARI ROUTH M.B., B.S.*, KAZAL REKHA BHOWMIK M.B., B.S.
