Requested move

[edit]

Official band title. Full capitalization for bands is not unusual in Japan. — Tokek 01:23, 17 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It was requested that this article be renamed but there was no consensus for it be moved. This proposed move violates our conventions, which say in part, that we do not use unconvential capitalizations for common words. As such I will not be moving it. However, I would like to thank the nominator for pointing out a pervasive problem with Japanese music groups, many of which have now been corrected. A similar debate is going on at Talk:iPod Nano on whether the article title should be "iPod nano" or "iPod Nano." It's unfortunate that action was taken to close this debate prematurely based on one user's bias. —Tokek 16:09, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Moved from the Votes for Deletion page

[edit]

From VfD:

Google shows only a page about an obscure Tokyo Gig and a few people's Winamp playlists. Is this worthy of Wikipedia? Aljandy 16:18, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[ Not a vote] Try this then: "ROUND TABLE featuring Nino" because ROUND TABLE is obfuscated with King Arthur... -- EmperorBMA|話す 16:21, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • [ Not a vote] Also discography includes a well known anime, Chobits and 2 other anime. -- EmperorBMA|話す 16:26, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • DELETE. ALL CAPS BUG ME. Gamaliel 18:08, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • All caps bug you? Under that logic, we should get rid of CLAMP. Keep; I think the songs they've done on just the animes listed gives them enough notability that it's quite possible that someone could look them up on wikipedia. - RedWordSmith 19:17, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • It was a joke. I voted for delete because I don't think this band is important enough to be encyclopedic. Gamaliel 19:25, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)
    • The Japanese Wikipedia has an article about it (in fact that's exactly where the material comes from). -- EmperorBMA|話す 21:00, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • [ Not a vote] Why is it in all caps? If they are a significant band in Japan, shouldn't they be as Round Table (band) or somesuch link? Average Earthman 20:36, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • The reason it is all caps is because that is the official title of the band. Same rationale as CLAMP... See: http://www.round-table.jp/ -- EmperorBMA|話す 20:55, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Many companies and bands and other self-important entities create an "official name" in ALL CAPS because it draws attention. Publications usually ignore their wishes and follow standard English capitalization rules, since things CAN BECOME hard to READ otherwise ... but Wikipedia is not consistent in this area. - DavidWBrooks 21:08, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Perhaps we should have a separate vote for article capitalization in addition to the deletion vote? -- EmperorBMA|話す 21:16, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • If the band's official name is spelled with ALL CAPS, then the Wikipedia article should refer to them in ALL CAPS. Vote: Keep. Sean Curtin
  • [ Not a vote] Quite a significant band. Full capitalization is not at all uncommon in j-pop groups. Rhymeless 23:57, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep. But they really should have thought about how it'd look on VfD before they named the band in all caps. Rhobite 03:33, Aug 5, 2004 (UTC)
  • [not a vote] Yes, quite true, I'll be sure to inform them at once. Rhymeless 03:40, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep. There are articles on less known bands. bbx 14:29, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Delete. Ephemeral fancruft. Wile E. Heresiarch 15:55, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep Rhymeless 06:57, 9 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep EmperorBMA|話す 14:33, 9 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Note: The purpose of this page is to determine whether ROUND TABLE should be deleted, including both the title and the text. The issue of capitalization is relevant only if someone thinks their preference for full caps is a sign of their insignificance, which no one seems to have yet proposed (except as a joke). Via strikeouts, i have refactored out nearly all the capitalization discussion.

If you want to express an opinion against capitalization, bear in mind that a vote to redirect is a vote to keep the text, with essentially a recomendation that the current title become a redirect to a different title; future editors may take that opinion into account and/or use redirect votes or their absence to bludgeon others with, but all you are really voting on is keep versus delete.

Casing issue

[edit]

On the one hand, attempt to even have a discussion on this issue was prematurely closed, on the other hand, it doesn't really make sense not to talk about this. My proposal is to have casing information in the article that complies with whatever that is permissible at WP:MOS-TM, along side with information on actual usage outside of Wikipedia. Similar examples of what I'm thinking of include:

  • "Sicko (or SiCKO) is a 2007..." over at Sicko
  • "Se7en (also known as Seven) is" over at Se7en (interestingly, btw, the article was moved from Seven (movie) to Se7en, which apparently doesn't require the extra parenthesis and piped links.)

What I am attempting is presenting information without distortion. Please add a reply if you disagree with this proposal, but avoid unconstructive insults. —Tokek 20:56, 8 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
