Rocketeer

[edit]

This film presents a homage to The Adventures of Robin Hood as does My Favorite Year.

Film ref

[edit]

I added back in a reference to the film and a link to that article, just a short blurb, and an image to fill in the emptiness. rootology 01:41, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rename

[edit]

This is per official Wikipedia policy at WP:NAME#Avoid the definite article ("the") and the indefinite article ("a"/"an") at the beginning of the page name. –-Tenebrae (talk) 18:59, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Isn't this a clear case of an exception to that rule? in fact, i'm pretty sure the line you're referencing is "Avoid definite and indefinite articles: Do not place definite or indefinite articles (the, a and an) at the beginning of titles unless they are part of a proper name (e.g. The Old Man and the Sea) or otherwise change the meaning (e.g. The Crown)." Though i'm not at all familiar with the comic book, it would seem this article's title should be the full "The Rocketeer Adventure Magazine", and even if the latter half was later dropped, there's a clear case to include the definite article for reasons of clarity and accuracy. The counter examples given in edit history (joker and shadow) follow suit - this article refers to the comic book series, joker refers to a comic character. Rocketeer therefore could be a stub on the character in this series, however "The Rocketeer..." should be the title of this article. And the shadow disambiguation lists "The Shadow" as the title of a movie, just as this is the title of the comic series. Mrchhre (talk) 17:43, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lack of opposition to a discussion does not give you free reign to move the article as you see fit. People may not have even seen this yet. I for one disagree with this, as did the admin who moved it back.— dαlus Contribs 22:01, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies. Is there a standard wait time for objection in a discussion? It seemed to me that after a few days any notation would have drifted off the 'recent change' radar or any watchlist. My mistake for acting without making more of an effort at discussion, but in what way is this a more accurate title for this article? Rocketeer can refer to the movie, the comic, or the character in either medium. This article is about the comic book with the aforementioned title, hence my move. I've already explained how i view this case in regards to the WP:NAME standard, the rule cited above clearly does not apply for the reasons i already stated(This strikes me as, to use the example in the WP:NAME line above, naming an article on that book "Old Man"). Apologies again, i certainly acknowledge that i'm new here and don't mean to overstep any bounds while i learn the ropes, but that's why i made the move - for what reason is reverting it the proper course of action? Mrchhre (talk) 02:23, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There is already a note at the top of the article describing its subject. I don't think it is really needed to have such a long and easy-to-miss name. Look at all the other comic book articles. None of them have a similar naming scheme. This is because it is easier to follow. Take Iron Man for instance. The first comics it debuted on were the Tales of Suspense comics, and later worked itself into other comics until it had a stable existence. The same exists for this comic. This article is about the publication as a whole. Not the single time it was on that single publisher. — dαlus Contribs 22:20, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for the explanation - i see the trend in comic articles where i didn't before. Point taken. Apologies again. Mrchhre (talk) 03:54, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Synopsis

[edit]

Looks like someone has had a little too much creative liscence with the synopsis- it is nothing like the film! If anyone has the time, feel free to enhance it. I'll delete the 'chaff'. —Preceding unsigned comment added by RedHotIceCube (talkcontribs) 21:29, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just looked at the revision that was removed. True, it's nothing like the plot of the film. But though the grammar and punctuation left something to be desired, it was a pretty darn accurate recap of the comic book. It went into way too much detail for an encyclopedia synopsis, but it definitely wasn't "vandalism" or "too much creative license." WaxTadpole (talk) 19:39, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The movie adaption comic

[edit]

it was polybagged with a premium. It needs to be added to the article . - Sparky (talk) 07:08, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No Fictional Character history?!

[edit]

There is no fictional character history, that should be added.--Paleface Jack (talk) 01:34, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

There appears to be a lack of mentioning of the Talespin episode Bullethead Baloo in relation to the Rocketeer, which seemed like a blatant cross-promoting for the two Disney productions (the Rocketeer movie and Talespin, that is). - 71.244.135.210 (talk) 17:46, 22 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Neville is Errol

[edit]

Early in the film, Cliff and Jenny go to see a film (her choice) called Wings of Honor, a billboard for which Cliff had flown over in the opening sequence and the gang at the Bulldog Cafe picks apart later on. Given the year in which Rocketeer takes place (1938) and that the villain Neville Sinclair was based on real-life actor Errol Flynn (complete with supposed sympathies), the film must be Dawn Patrol.

Main image

[edit]

Shouldn't it be more relevant and, most of all, more respectful to use an image of the character actually made by Dave Stevens? Is there any copyright issue that prevent that? CaptainViggo (talk) 20:37, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I realize this has been here for years, but I myself am a case in point for its removal - The very first time I came to this page looking for more information about the comic books, I clicked that link and assumed that it was taking me to canonical lore about the character of the Rocketeer. The words "Wold Newton" didn't mean anything to me, nor did it indicate that those words indicated that the lore was basically fanwank. The fact that Philip Jose Farmer's name is attached to "Wold Newton" doesn't somehow elevate fanwank from being fanwank. Especially when the specific fanwank is, itself, free from any actual input for Mr. Farmer himself. Personally, I'd take the "easier to ask forgiveness than permission" route and just remove it, but I figure that the continued existence of this link might indicate that someone has a vested interest in maintaining it and perhaps can offer some justification for keeping it. [edit]

If there's only going to be one image, shouldn't it be from an actual Rocketeer comic by Stevens? 98.13.3.175 (talk) 06:36, 10 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

God yes. I like Alex Ross but it's insult to injury to have the rampant post-mortem buggering of the character front and centre, especially when the original artist is Dave Stevens. One of the many jobs I'll be addressing in the rewrite. BoomboxTestarossa (talk) 18:40, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Original research?

[edit]

A "Rocket Man" character, with a near-identical rocket backpack and similar uniform, appeared in four Republic Pictures movie serials from 1949 through 1953. The fourth serial, originally conceived as a syndicated Republic TV series, was first released under contractual obligation to movie houses as a regular multi-chapter theatrical serial. Two years later, it was re-cut with new footage and additional music added and finally syndicated on NBC television stations as twelve 25-minute episodes. The four Republic Rocket Man serials were: King of the Rocket Men (1949), Radar Men from the Moon (1952), Zombies of the Stratosphere (1952), and Commando Cody: Sky Marshal of the Universe (serial 1953, TV series 1955)[1]

This paragraph doesn't actually seem to tie into The Rocketeer or any of the currently present sources; I mean it probably influenced Stevens and no doubt a reference can be turned up but seems more concerned with banging on about the serials than establishing any relation to the subject of the article beyond "character, with a near-identical rocket backpack and similar uniform", which is sending major OR alarm bells in. A critic compares it to the serials? Splendid, mention that. Stevens admits he ripped it off from those specific serials? Terrific, pop it in. Some random noting similar uniforms? Get in the sea.
