"Most populous city proper in the world"

Isn't Chongqing considered the most populous city proper in the world? I know the area of Chongqing is much larger than the actual "city", but what standard is being used to classify Chongqing as not a "city proper" while Shanghai is? —Lights and freedom (talk ~ contribs) 07:18, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

It depends on how you define a "city". I think a city is supposed to be defined as a built-up area (without too long distance between two buildings). If a city is defined as a built-up area, the most populous city in the world is Tokyo (which includes Yokohama-Saitama-Chiba) followed by Jakarta and Delhi, while New York, however, is the largest city by area.

The most populous city in China, as well as the 4th most in the world, is Guangzhou including Foshan, while Shanghai is only the second most populous and Beijing the third most.

P.S.: You are supposed to pronounce it [sháng-hai] and not [shanghái] as most European people seem to be used to say. In Chinese it is pronounced [sháng-hai], and therefore it should be pronounced so even in English. 212.100.101.104 (talk) 21:51, 3 August 2023 (UTC)

Among the refugees in the Shanghai Ghetto was the Mirrer Yeshiva, including its students and faculty.   • Other forms of Christianity in Shanghai include Eastern Orthodox minorities and, since 1996, registered Christian Protestant churches.
  • Shanghai is also home to the cadre school China Executive Leadership Academy in Pudong and the China Europe International Business School. The city government's education agency is the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission.
  • Futuristic structures, such as the Oriental Pearl Tower and the neon-illuminated Yan'an Elevated Road, are examples that have boosted Shanghai's cyberpunk image.
  • Other notable parks in Shanghai include Lu Xun Park, Century Park, Gucun Park [zh], Gongqing Forest Park, and Jing'an Park.

@CanonNi Wow that was a fast response. So it seems that Shanghai is the most populous "urban area" in China, while Chongqing is the most populous "city proper". Any thoughts on what that means relative to the definition of "most populous city"? Alexysun (talk) 10:27, 2 July 2024 (UTC)

@CanonNi I see. I guess there can be a "most populous city" when only talking about the urban core and also a different "most populous city" when you add in the suburban areas surrounding the urban core. Alexysun (talk) 00:10, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
