Bank to Mansion House stations

[edit]

The section Underground lines on geographically accurate maps contains the strange statement "Those traveling from Bank Station to Mansion House on the Underground would, based on the map, take the Central Line to Liverpool Street, change to the Circle Line, travel five more stops, and arrive at a station that is 200 feet away from the start of the trip." However, the traveler at Bank could transfer right there to Monument Station and then only need to travel two stops on the Circle or District line to get to Mansion House. Still an unnecessary journey, but not so outlandish. Thisisnotatest (talk) 05:55, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Thisisnotatest: The statement would probably have been somewhat plausible when the cited source was published (1996), although maybe the author was using an old copy of the map. According to this map (1987) and this map (1990), before about 1990 Bank station was shown much further away from Monument so that the Central line was perfectly straight between Ealing Broadway and Bethnal Green. I think it would make sense to remove it since the first sentence applies to most rapid transit system maps and the rest is no longer accurate in any case. Line colours

[edit]

I seem to remember reading in:

  • Garland, Ken (1994). Mr. Beck's Underground Map. Capital Books.

that one reason for the original chosen colours was their distinction in poor lighting. The article only mentions print technology, not lighting considerations.

Unfortunately I no longer have the book, but it would be good to add this if it can be verified. 85.67.32.244 (talk) 07:45, 1 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Unsupported claim. Despite the large number of versions over the years, the perception of many users is that the current map is, more or less, Beck's original version from the 1930s, a testament to the effectiveness of his design [citation needed]. FACT: the current map has very little resemblance to the Beck's designs. A strong marketing campaign by TfL, including a text on the corner of the map, has been created. 2A01:4B00:8617:8400:CC5C:F1D3:E015:871A (talk) 08:02, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
