Other versions

[edit]

Kudos to the author of the Branigan material, but much as I love her "Gloria", it's not the most notable of the many different songs with this title. The Van Morrison song has her beat not only on longevity but also number of cover versions and by Billboard charting (both for the original Them version and several covers!). There's also the Esther Navarro doo-wop tune to consider, which was a hit for The Cadillacs and well-covered by The Manhattan Transfer, among others.

I'm adding some of the raw details of these other versions, but I eventually hope that we'll refactor this article to reflect these three notable versions more equally. — Jeff Q 04:37, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Okay, I've added the additional song material, but in a condensed list form that could use some prose expansion. Not only that, but the condensed info is several times the length of the Branigan material. This might imply an opportunity for separate articles, but for now I would suggest just expanding this one to describe in detail the three best-known versions and mention the others. I doubt that'll make more than one substantial article for the time being. — Jeff Q 06:41, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Actually the song og Laura Branigan is a cover of an italian song with the same title, performed by Umberto Tozzi. Snowdog 3 July 2005 02:23 (UTC)

Shouldn't this be part of the disambiguation page for Gloria? --Kristbg 02:49, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think this should be a separate page, as it is now. First, it is already larger than the disambiguation page. Second, music is a specialized topic. Third, I was looking for two of the songs Gloria and arrived here easily enough, so I don't think people have any trouble finding this material. Since there hasn't been any discussion in two weeks, I will remove the merge note, but I'm open to more discussion. Hu 05:14, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Umberto Tozzi song/Laura Branigan song re-separation on disambiguation page and in article

[edit]

I combined the Manhattan Transfer song mention with the Leon René song on the disambiguation page for Gloria (song) because, despite the addition of other lyrics for the Cadillacs' recording, the sentiment of the song remained the same and so seems to be essentially the same composition.

The Branigan/Tozzi issue is quite different. The Laura Branigan song is not a cover, or—as it is often mischaracterized—a translation, but a distinct lyrical composition from the Umberto Tozzi song in the sense that the lyrics do not tell the same story, or by any stretch of interpretation a similar story, and in fact tell virtually an opposite story.

If someone wishes to take issue with that and elucidate why the different lyrics support a separate mention on the disambig page or even a separate article, one for the original and those covers of that composition and the other for the Cadillacs' revision and those covers of that version, I doubt I would object to that. That is certainly what I proscribe for the Tozzi and Branigan songs, which are infinitely more disparate lyrically.

I will include an expanded version of this point on the Gloria (Laura Branigan song) talk page in the coming day or two. Abrazame (talk) 13:14, 27 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
