Oldest artificial coal seam fire?

[edit]

The claim making it the longest-duration human-caused conflagration in the world seems dubious. The given link is a "gee whiz" facts page that doesn't include any references. As our coal seam fire article points out, there are many coal seam fires that have lasted for multiple centuries, and in a few cases, for millennia. Of course in the really old ones there is often uncertainty about how they started, which may include natural causes. For example the Brennender Berg has been burning for 321 years; the local belief is that it was started (accidentally) by a shepherd, although this is unprovable and some people believe it started naturally.

At any rate, it seems unlikely that the oldest artificially started one is only 125 years old, so it would be good if we could get a better reference. -- 202.63.39.58 (talk) 11:37, 26 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
