First SGOTUS to appear in uniform in public?

[edit]

Was Koop really the first Surgeon General to appear/speak in public in full uniform? knoodelhed (talk) 02:39, 22 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

no but he was more of a publicity hound than many of his predecessors. My father was in the Commissioned Corps back in the 50s - although only a Senior (equivalent of a Navy Commander), he was often in uniform while on the job.

Merited?

[edit]

This article states: "These four issues, combined with Koop's personality and his willingness to make use of mass media, brought to the office of Surgeon General a higher public profile than it previously had merited..." Not sure "merited" is the right word, it almost makes it sound like previous Surgeon Generals has been slackers or undeserving. Suspect "experienced" or "achieved" might be more neutral. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:801:300:7520:5F4:91D8:F686:B02B (talk) 09:16, 28 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
