Neutrality and Style

[edit]

Right now, much of this reads like a press release. If you really care about the band, or about punk, or about Wikipedia, some one needs to edit this to read like a Wikipedia entry, not like a press release for the band. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.53.199.71 (talk) 22:33, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Arn't the Casualties from NYC and not New Jersey? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.136.91.9 (talk) 15:33, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The term "hardcore punk" has more accuracy to their sound and they also call their music "hardcore".

Make this change to the current line up: Megger's real name is Mike Eggers.

Much as I'd love to state that the Casualties aren't sellout because they don't really care about promotion(leaving it to other people who in turn make the decisions regarding the soccer jerseys and selling merch as interpunk and Hot topic); I suppose it is a good idea to include the controversy about their punk credibility in the description - good job, whoever did this. Tias 08:53, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

To say that The Casualties are sell-outs is stupid, not to mention that there is no professional band out there that are not selling out in some shape or form. After all The Ramones were on major label for over 20 years. Furthermore Hot Topic is a sell out store but I don't think any bands pick the specific store their merchandise is displayed in, that is the business of the record label and merchandiser. The Warped Tour may have featured some bands that are questionable in their true belief in punk, but after all they (The Warped Tour) do have to make profit(Gulp). If they don't, well they would not have been the longest running festival.

I disagree, somewhat. You'll have to remember that The Casualties style themselves as a DIY punk band, and that requires them to follow that ethic not to be considered sell-outs. Playing the warped tour and appearing on commercial labels mean that they support forced conformity of music and the corporate transnational sweatshop/drug/weapon-producing firms said labels are sometimes associated financially with. This makes them sellouts to DIY punk rockers( much like the Ramones are considered sellouts by many today).Tias 08:39, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
What kind of real DIY punk band would write songs called (literally) the Oi Song, Punks and Skins, Punk Rock Love, Punx Unite, Punk Rock, Street Punk, or For the Punx? They start out news announcements on the website with "Dear punx," and "Yo punx." They also went a completley overboard with the punk fashion to a point where they look ridiculous (this is coming from someone who has been going to street punk shows for years). 68.48.230.98 05:24, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

to say that a punk can "sell-out" is to say that there is a certain stereotype that people must follow in order to "fit in" and stay "in the clique". It's ridiculous to say that punk bands can't be succesful and can't be liked by people who aren't "punks" or they're "selling out". "Punk" is simply a style of music, not some stereotypical high-school-like clique where everyone must conform to standards of dress, politics, class, etc...

True, but punk is also a subculture that has roots in a DIY yourself attitude. What (I think) the people above believe is that The Casualties are trying to prophit from the image of the punk culture, which is not something a 'real punk band' would do. You do raise a good point though, about the punk musical style being something that anyone can enjoy.
However, the Casualties promote themselves as a D.I.Y. punk band. Commercial success is not off limits to punk bands. But is off limits limits to people who openly decry commercial success before they themselves obtain it (i.e. the Casualties). They wrote their own fucking book of rules, so let's make them follow it. User:Mitchbradt (P.S. the paragraph above mine wasn't by me.)

I'd just like to say thanx to the person who cleared up all the bias on this page. I was about to do it myself. User:Germs

Just two things to add: Plenty of bands choose where their merch is sold, even those on major labels. Things like that are worked out in contract agreements, and bands with strong beliefs about certain companies or stores will refuse to concede that point in the contract, normally sacrificing some money in the process. Hell, the fucking Monkees had a battle with their record company to gain artistic control of their music. Secondly, punks have a certain DIY ethic that the Distillers can be seen to be cashing in on. Just look at them: Jackets all self-studded and painted, I bet. I imagine they wouldn't ever think of buying one pre-modified. But they support, indirectly, companies that actually promote that... that's why I would consider them sellouts. There's the Margaret Thatcher quote: "Being powerful is like being a lady - if you have to tell someone you are, you aren't." And dear nonexistant God knows that the Casualties love to tout their own horn of punkness. --Switch 13:14, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah and quoting Margaret Thatcher makes you an expert on what is to be true to punk, seriously.

Hello, Thatchergate? Know thy Enemy? Any of this register? --Switch 06:39, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Why wouldn't it make them an expert? It show's they know enough about politics to be aware of views of not only their political side but also those of their "enemies", as you call it. Not to say I know much about Thatcher (I wasn't alive during her rule and I don't live in the U.K.). But still, why does being aware make someone a posuer? Huh?! Huh?! User:Mitchbradt

I enjoy the Casualties music, but they're a mockery of punk. They overdo the style to death, and saying things like 'we are punks!' every 5 minutes is just sad. for the punx? up the punx? spikey haired drunk punx? Come on, how lame can you get.

What happened to colin? does anyone know? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.134.187.229 (talk) 06:25, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

they would be sellouts if they ever had anything to sell out of. they're just into doing their hair and fucking underage girls. diy punx have never taken them seriously and have actually been actively hostile towards them. jorge tried to fight me once but it was one of those things where it's just some drunk guy yelling and he tries to throw a punch but falls down and hurts himself. i don't have articles or whatever to back any of this up; it's not edit worthy. i thought i'd throw in what everyone involved in diy punk already knows just to give the conversation a fuller scope.--Victorhazzard (talk) 08:01, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Rape Charges

[edit]

Jorge is a confirmed rapist. Many women have come forward to report his sexual assaults. He is a dangerous predator.07:29, 8 November 2013 (UTC)

I've been hearing a lot of stuff about jorge getting charged with rape... does anyone have any info on this?--Terronez 02:52, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah im pretty sure I heard alot about this too but I don't think rapeing the punk culture of all of its pride is a crime. : (

I doubt Jorge raped anyone. I would ask him at the upcoming show on the 7th, but I'm not going to.

My friend said he knows a girl who slept with Jorge, and she was only 16 at the time. I don't know if that's related to the incident you are talking about or not.

The story that I've heard (I must stress this is hearsay) is that he repeatedly flirts with and hits on underage girls and women. An acquaintance of mine once told me Jorge said to her (in reference to sex between the two), "it's not illegal if the cops don't find out." Please remember, I have no factual evidence for these claims, only that from prevailing gossip and corresponding stories between young women there seems to be some basis to it. While it remains gossip, the stories are consistent and widespread enough to validate some consideration. My assumption is that these rape charges are actually Statutory Rape. (January 10, 2011)

Here is a blog post from a survivor that Jorge sexually assaulted. Excerpt: "I am the survivor of a sexual assault at the age of 16 by a man more than 10 years older than me. This man cornered me in a room and tried to force me to perform sexual acts on him, stating he would tell everyone in the van I did it anyway so I might as well. When I fled the room, he chased me down the hall, pinning me against a wall and shoving his hands down every orifice he could find while shoving his mouth over mine to prevent my muffled screams and tears from being heard." You can read the full account here: http://putyourdamnpantson.com/2013/11/05/guest-post-i-wont-apologize-for-being-assaulted/

Let's stop pretending the clever use of "hearsay" takes anything away from the violent and misogynistic acts he has committed, and may still be, with full impunity. This has no place anywhere, and he should have no place being glorified in #punk.

Any idea how Rape Allegations can be added to the band's Wiki entry? [1] SairaMuza (talk) 17:57, 8 November 2013 (UTC) SairaMuza[reply]

Well, here's an article about it, trigger warning. http://putyourdamnpantson.com/2013/11/05/guest-post-i-wont-apologize-for-being-assaulted/ --Overand (talk) 21:42, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"Selling Out"

[edit]

I personally dont think the casualties have sold out. They still play the most annoying music to the masses. I love them. I listen to green day and when american idiot came out i was saddened by the coverage on it. Long live the casualties. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 206.228.154.64 (talk) 21:05, 25 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Label history?

[edit]

On the Eyeball Records page, it lists the Casualties as a past band that signed with Eyeball. However, this is unlisted here. Any clarification? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.249.49.251 (talk) 02:16, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
