Official name

[edit]

Who can tell me, which name is the official name? Suttung or Suttungr? Yaohua2000 21:19, 2004 May 18 (UTC)

It's almost always referred to as Suttung, but is called Suttungr in some more official sources. --Patteroast 03:29, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)
User:Zaphod Beeblebrox researched this by contacting "official sources" (the IAU WGPSN). The original IAUC 8177 gave them as "Skadi, Suttung, Thrym", but the WGPSN later decided to go with the more correct Norse spellings "Skathi, Suttungr, Thrymr", which are now official. However, many folks out there didn't get the memo, because Skadi/Suttung/Thrym beats Skathi/Suttungr/Thrymr on Google by 10 to 1. -- Curps 09:48, 3 Jul 2004 (UTC)

pronunciation

[edit]

When I asked Cambridge how adding the ar affects the pronunciation, they said, "Yes, the r is pronounced as another syllable -- spelt in modern Icelandic -ur for this reason." Grammatically, I believe the -r is the nominative case ending. The accusative form (and the root) would just be 'Suttung'. Same for Thrym(r). So it's not a matter of which form is correct, but which form you consider basic, the nominative or the root. The IAU decided to go with the nominative. --kwami 05:39, 14 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Since adjectival forms in English are usually based on the root of the word (compare Iris/iridium, Venus/venereal, Mars/Martian, Pluto/Plutonian, etc.), the r would be dropped. I have no idea if 'Suttungan' would be used, but *'Suttungran' would not. kwami 2005 June 30 06:45 (UTC)
