I really think there should be a link to Hieroglyphics_(group) --iftrueelsefalse 14:35, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect Link?

[edit]
  • Maya_civilization#Writing_system link dosent agree with term of hieroglyph? something should be done to correct this use here ?

hyrogliph

[edit]

Article states this as an alternative spelling. Never heard any educated person spell it this way, any sources? If not i think it should be deleted as it seems to be nothing more than a misspelling. Any opinions?--71.97.131.187 06:00, 13 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What kind of educated person would actually spell the word he is talking about? Mallerd 20:12, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Religious

[edit]

In the same way, although the term "hieroglyphics" is still used today, this usage adds a tone of informality (such as in the above example of Greek practice), and is technically incorrect. It is more correct to use the noun "hieroglyphs" for both the language as a whole and for the individual characters that compose it, or to use the term "hieroglyphic" as an adjective (e.g., a hieroglyphic writing system).

Is this sourced? I mean, the hieroglyphs are used to make something sacred, to put spells on [pharao's] tombs etc. It's not just any kind of glyph that is found somewhere that is sacred. Only when it is used to as mentioned before, used to enchant an object of any sort, then it is a hieroglyph. Mallerd 20:11, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

BDSM Example

[edit]

As amusing as I think the addition of the BDSM image is, I hardly think it's suitable as a general example of this form of writing. Perhaps it should be removed. Keen for opinions. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ascolti (talkcontribs) 17:01, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am inclined to agree. It seems like an inappropriate place for it as an example, when I'm sure that dozens of other "modern" choices would do the job fine. It is, almost, sensationalist just for the sake of it. BDSM in hieroglyphs? Please! Maedin\talk 19:09, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed this link from the External links section, because it is behind a paywall (per WP:ELNO #6). If the article can be used as a reference (cited), then it would be acceptable. Ask at WP:REX to request a copy, if available. HTH. -- Quiddity (talk) 04:43, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup needed

[edit]

I added a cleanup tag. The article reads like a mediocre school report: poorly written, ungrammatical, with unsupported claims -- needs some love! --Kai Carver (talk) 20:37, 25 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I had a whack at some of the passages but it it still has a lot of sentences that make me cringe. IMHO the article needs to pull back from Eygyptian examples since there already is a good article on that subject. General attributes of all hieroglyphic systems and a survey of other Hierophyphic systems such as Anatolian and Mayan are areas for improvement. Nice! looks better! will try to have a closer look when i have a minute --Kai Carver (talk) 10:24, 28 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Removing drive-by tag

[edit]

I'm removing the questioned drive-by tag. I did correct the most glaring format error, which was a disambig in the intro. I think if you have further items, which I am sure you do, they can best go just following the item to be corrected. As to the above, emotional reactions, you know, WP is open to anyone at least until they demonstrate destructive tendencies. That can also include juveniles. In fact, some outstanding presentations have come from them. Try to have a little compassion. Remember your first writing efforts? I think you might be harder on the good-faith efforts that need more work than you are on the vandals. Teach rather than compete.Dave (talk) 01:30, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Needs Work

[edit]

I ended up at this article on a whim with no special interest in Hieroglyphs, but I feel compelled to spend time tidying this up. While there is a significant (in relation to the length of the article) amount of uncsourced material in this article I more immediatly noticed that the writing style is significantly lacking in the quality I would expect from an encyclopedia. I will be making a series of edits tomrrow, the talk page is pretty dead but if anyone is watching this I would be pleased to have help Noexit2002 (talk) 06:04, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Totally. I have done a copy edit and added some citation tags. I do have sources for this material but I am about to go away for a couple of weeks. I will help again once I return. Morgan Leigh | Talk 07:47, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

page history

[edit]

I merged this into the "see also" section of Egyptian hieroglyphs, after I deleted a lot of nonsense (Chinese hieroglyphs?), as that's all it was. The page history and this talk page might be best moved to hieroglyph (disambiguation); what I merged might also be best there. — kwami (talk) 19:02, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
