Cloag?

[edit]

Do we have a source for the claim that Stirling was born in "Cloag"? As far as I can tell, Cloag is a farm just north of the Perthshire village of Methven (we don't have an article for the village yet, but I'll get around to it). The proprietor of the farm (who naturally runs it as a holiday cottage too) doesn't mention this on his website. I'll send them an email and see if they know anything about it. -- John Fader 03:08, 17 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Note to self - here's the multimap OS page for Cloag. -- John Fader 03:12, 17 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Bob Sier's 1995 biography of the Rev Robert Stirling D D. (ISBN 0 9526417 0 4) gives Cloag as his birth place (and also a lot more information which would greatly improve this article!). 213.123.247.91 (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 13:24, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wondering if anyone plans to add some more information about Robert Stirling's science and development behind the Sterling Engine? That is a contribution of his that I believe most people are familiar with. Njg9r6 (talk) 17:48, 16 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I am going to be adding a large chunk of additional information to the Engineering and Science section of this article. I am also going to remove the section about optics as there is essentially no mention of this part of his career in any credible sources. Njg9r6 (talk) 16:13, 6 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Going to add some additional changes to the article in the Engineering and science section — Preceding unsigned comment added by Njg9r6 (talkcontribs) 16:24, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Going to be adding in more citations, so don't delete anything yet please! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Njg9r6 (talkcontribs) 16:50, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Going to Change info in the Background section and will add a line to Honors. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Njg9r6 (talkcontribs) 02:38, 18 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Going to delete the section on the Bessemer Process as it is now mentioned in the hot air engine sectionNjg9r6 (talk) 16:38, 27 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Rankine vs. Rankin

[edit]

Two persons, who studied heat machines:

1. Robert Stirling (1790–1878) married Jean Rankine.

2. William John Macquorn Rankine (1820–1872), son of Lt David Rankin (sic).

William Rankine is 30 years younger than Robert Stirling. Williams father carries the surname Rankin without "e". This indicates, that William Rankine is most probable no relative of Jean Rankine.
