Photo

[edit]

I replaced the original copyrighted photo of the town-hall with one I took myself. It's higher resolution and GFDL, so I hope it will be of more use to people interested in this topic. The original can be found here. --Salimfadhley 21:27, 20 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Photoshopped it to clear out the street paraphenalia. Hope you don't mind. hjuk 01:15, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Urban legends

[edit]

This is the source of the urban legend about Bob Dylan http://www.expectingrain.com/dok/div/crouchend.html (The Sunday Telegraph, 1997)

I've heard that Bob Dylan story (with variations) a few times and even retold it myself more than once. It seems to be *the* Crouch End tale and definitely deserves its place here. But the Marcel Duchamp anecdote is either true, in which case it's nice but not an urban legend, or not true, in which case I'm not convinced it should be in the encyclopedia. Classifying it as an urban legend is just an excuse for including an uncited piece of information. Russ London 12:31, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

History

[edit]

Would be nice if someone could include some history about Crouch End - what it was before it was part of London etc. Does anyone have anything on that? ThePeg 2006

Obession with minor Celebs

[edit]

Most of the activity on this article seems to come from an obsession with adding minor celebs. Is that all Crouch End is? Can't we sweep away all that fru-fru nonsense and get some real meat on the bones that gives a better picture of poor old Crouchie. Or has it become just a big girl's blouse nowadays? hjuk 01:13, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Strong support Every couple of weeks I sweep by this page and clear out the sorrier hasbeens and neverwozzes which seem to sprout on that list like weeds. The only reason I've not deleted it altogether is because so many people seem to want it to stay. IMO it's a vandal magnet with no encyclopedic value - I can't think of many other articles in which the phrases "it is claimed", "according to legend" and "it has been said" have sat unchallenged for so long.iridescent 01:19, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've deleted a reference to Marlone Opit DanSmith once already, but 87.255.111.170 has re-added it (together with an article which has already been deleted by someone else). I'm reluctant to start an editing war by deleting it again. What do people suggest? --Steve James (talk) 23:38, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since I tidied it all up (see below) things have got a lot better. I've found on most articles that if it's possible to leave things for a couple of weeks and then go back and edit, the anonymous editor will usually have gotten bored and gone away (but some can be presistent). Buena suerte! hjuk (talk) 00:42, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Has anyone ever considered semi-protection to prevent anonymous users from vandalising the notable residents section? I would have thought there was sufficient evidence in the article history to warrant this. --Steve James (talk) 13:46, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good. No idea how to go about it though. Support you if you can take it forward. hjuk (talk) 15:21, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've added a request for semi-protection to Wikipedia:Requests_for_page_protection. --Steve James (talk) 19:11, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

:::Done, for a couple of weeks to see if it makes a difference. Let me know if they come back when the protection expires.iridescent 19:20, 1 May 2008 (UTC) [reply]

And undone - this edit war is happening in such slow motion that protection will cause more harm then good.iridescent 19:31, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. I guess it's not that much trouble reversing these edits.--Steve James (talk) 20:49, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Article Tidy up

[edit]

I've tidied it all up a bit,

  • tried to use what was there and organise it more logically and take the balance of focus away from being so celebrity obesessed.
  • combined the two famous/notable residents sections, put them in columns and the additional info on each in the footnotes
  • put the disproportionately high volume of other arts related material under a Local Arts Scene heading
  • added refs section (deleted the two stray refs because I couldn't find what they linked to)
  • added some history info from the rather better Town Hall article
  • and other twiddles.

I tried to put something about the angels of kaos with is a crouch end based choir, but it keeps being deleted.. why?

Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.44.42.5 (talk) 14:47, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Created Category:People from Crouch End

[edit]

Created Category: People from Crouch End and attached to all exitsing people on page. hjuk (talk) 15:29, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Are any of those people actually FROM Crouch End? Can I add me, coz I am, and so was me great great granny! Pterre (talk) 16:20, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's a damn good question. I've no idea. I just tried to tidy the page up. If you'd looked at it a few months ago you'd have seen it was far more celeb obsessed (Hard to belive but true). Edit away. hjuk (talk) 22:34, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I went though each of the people listed in this section, searched their page for confirmation of Crouch End residence. Where this was present and People from Crouch End Cat was absent, I added that. I suggest that from here on in if editors want to add people to this list, they add the 'People from Crouch End' cat to the person's page, including necessary verification.Cheekeong (talk) 23:01, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions for additions

[edit]

As a Crouch End resident of over 20 years, if anyone has any suggestions for enhancing this article I'd be happy to have a go at researching them. Please drop me a line on my talk page if you have any ideas. MarkRae (talk) 13:35, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ho Chi Minh?

[edit]

Does anyone have any citations for the Ho Chi Minh story? If so that would be great. Lookatmyawesomeface (talk) 14:14, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Astbury Citation

[edit]

The Astbury book has a website on which the contents of the book are searchable. No results are returned for either Crouch End or Hornsey. If they're there, but for some reason unindexed, I suggest a page ref and perhaps quote is provided. HughJLF (talk) 00:51, 19 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
